Reggae Youths, Wadadah booted from Captain’s KO
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Super League teams Reggae Youths and Wadadah FC were on Wednesday eliminated from the St James Football Association’s Captain’s Bakery and Grill Knockout after suffering close losses in a double-header at Jarrett Park.
Reggae Youths, who will contest the Super League mid-season final on Sunday, were edged 1-0 by Montego Bay Boys’ Club in an all-Super League clash that saw both teams finishing the game with 10 players each, while Senior League team Club Stars beat Wadadah 5-4 on penalty kicks after they had played out a 1-1 regulation and extra-time scoreline.
Montego Bay Boys’ Club and Clubs Stars both advanced to the quarter-finals where they will join Heights FC, Somerton FC and Revelation FC.
The second round ends this afternoon when Division One high-flyers Irwin United take on Senior League contenders Catherine Hall FC at the UDC field, starting at 3:00 pm.
Irwin United lead Zone One of the Division One with 10 points from four games and have scored the most goals (14 so far) of all the 10 teams in the competition.
They will, however, be coming up against the Senior League title favourites Catherine Hall, who also lead their zone with 10 points and have conceded just one goal in four games.
On Wednesday at Jarrett Park, Leroy Christie’s goal in time added on at the end of the first half gave Boys’ Club the edge over Reggae Youths.
Both teams lost a player each in the 33rd minute when Reggae Youths’ Santino Grinnion and Boys’ Club’s Marvin Sangster exchanged blows and were sent off by referee Shawn Wright.
Sangster left the field and returned with a weapon, but was restrained by teammates.
In the first game, Club Stars upset the Super League team, giving up a first-half lead, but held on to win on penalty kicks.
