Hair By Tess
It’s always that much easier to continue with what you know, especially when it comes to hair. Taking a break from processing your hair takes guts, real guts. Why? That awful period called the transition, of course.
It was no different for braid specialist Teresa ‘Tess’ Simpson, who not only helps with the transition but gives customers the gorgeous option of Marley twists. Your Under The Dryer team shares more…
Under the Dryer (UTD):
How long have you been in the business?
Teresa ‘Tess’ Simpson (TS): We have been in business for three years.
UTD: What led you to specialise in braids?
TS: I went through a transition stage with my own hair. I was transitioning from weave/processed hair to natural hair. After transitioning for 18 months I finally decided to cut the processed ends off and go natural. Some two months into my natural hair journey I noticed (mainly overseas) quite a few women with a hairstyle — regular rope twists — called Marley hair.
I
YouTubed it, tried it a few times in my own hair and liked it! I was unemployed at the time, so I started to offer the Marley twists style. The rest, as they say, is history. Mirror, Mirror Salon is located at Oniels Place, 33 Hagley Park Road (second floor).
UTD: And the cost?
TS: We carry a pretty wide selection of braids, so it really depends on the choice of hair, the look required and how long the process takes. Prices start at $3,000.
UTD: What’s the hottest look right now and how much hair is required?
TS: Goddess faux locs. Faux locs, without a doubt. We provide the hair for that particular look. If your preference is for faux locs you will require between seven to 10 packs of Ya Man Afro twist braids (Marley hair).
UTD:
What are a few of the products used?
TS: We normally use the Cream of Nature products on all our clients. Our preferred is the Ossion Wax (for edge control).
UTD: Share one major hair-care tip.
TS: Use very little products on the braids. Focus on the roots. The less you interfere with the style, the longer it lasts. Our faux locs last up to four months.
UTD:
What are the hair care steps prior to braiding?
TS: 1. Wash.
2. Deep treatment, like a hot oil.
3. A blowout makes hair easier to handle while braiding/styling.
