Sandals, Reggae Youths battle for Western Confed Super League mid-season final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Both Sandals South Coast and Reggae Youths are expressing confidence going into today’s mid-season final of the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation/Charlie’s JB Rum Super League at Jarrett Park, set to start at 5:00 pm.
The teams qualified for the final after topping their respective zones after the first two rounds of games; Reggae Youths topped Zone One with 19 points and are into their first-ever Super League final, while Sandals South Coast, who are in their second mid-season final, topped Zone Two with 28 points, 11 more than second-placed Montego Bay Boys Club.
In two previous meetings, both last season, Sandals beat Reggae Youths 4-0 in the second game after drawing the first game 2-2, and will go into the final as the favourites after a dominating performance in the first 10 games.
Aaron Lawrence, coach of the Sandals South Coast team that is going after their second mid-season title in three seasons, said his charges were “in high spirits” and were “committed to winning it all” this season.
Sandals South Coast beat Savannah SC on penalty kicks two seasons ago and Lawrence said, while they have not seen much of Reggae Youths so far this season, they know the St James team possesses some good players, and they are expecting a tough battle.
A few additions to the team, he said, made the difference this year as they have won nine games and drawn one, but said they are not getting complacent as “there is always room for improvement”.
Loren Sailsman, who took over Reggae Youths this season, said failure to win their last two games will not be a factor as they go after their first Super League title.
Reggae Youths were held 1-1 by Hopewell United in their Super League game on Sunday and were then beaten 1-0 by Montego Bay Boys Club in a St James Football Association/Captain’s Bakery and Grill Knockout game on Wednesday.
“Yes, we have not won the last two games but we created more scoring chances than the other teams, but were let down by our finishing,” he told the Jamaica Observer on Friday.
Regardless of the outcome of today’s game, Sailsman said his team has had a good season and they are keeping their aim high, with the semi-finals of the league their next aim.
Reggae Youths’s O’Carey Spence leads the league with nine goals with his strike partner Santino Grinnion accounting for five, while Ron Daley with six goals and Dervin Campbell with four have scored half of Sandals South Coast’s goals.
