Commendations to Lisa Hanna
Dear Editor,
Lisa Hanna ought to be commended for the courage which she has shown in speaking out regarding Vybz Kartel recordings while being incarcerated.
She was willing to risk not only her political career but also her personal safety for what she felt was right. We need more politicians like her. Perhaps the time has come for the Government to take a look at the Jamaican law as it pertains to victims of crimes being compensated by the perpetrators.
Victims should be allowed to file civil suits against those who victimise them. The standard of proof for recovery in civil suits should be lower than that for criminal trials. Hence many people who are found not guilty in criminal trials could still be held accountable in civil court.
Consequently, victims and their families should be able to go after money that these perpetrators have before and after they go to prison. Money made behind bars would be fair game for the victims and their families.
