Holmwood, St Jago lead girls’, boys’ standings at Central Championships

Lead girls’, boys’ standings at Digicel Central Athletics Championships

Holmwood Technical girls and St Jago High boys were atop the Digicel Central Athletics Championships at the GC Foster College at press time yesterday.

Holmwood Technical had amassed 75.5 points after six finals and held a narrow lead over defending champions Edwin Allen High on 74 with St Jago High third on 49 points. Hydel High were on 45 in fourth, just ahead of Vere Technical on 41.5 points.

In the boys’ section, defending champions St Jago were way out front leading by 78 points after eight finals. The Monk Street boys were on 104 points with Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen High both on 26 points. Glenmuir High were fourth on 15 points, with Christiana High fifth on 14 points.

The Championships continue today with defending girls’ champions Edwin Allen looking set to surge to the front and retain their title along with St Jago boys.

St Jago boys swept finals as the outstanding Lushane Wilson led the way capturing the Class One high jump with a height of 2.05m. His teammate Tony Haughton was second with 1.95m just ahead of Renford Carty of Central High with 1.90m.

In-form Damar Marshall continued his good form winning the Class Two high jump clearing the bar at 1.85m and pulling his teammate Vanderleer Palmer to second with 1.80m. Ewarton High’s Odane Smith with 1.75m was third.

Glenmuir’s Oshane Israel took the Class Three long jump with a leap of 5.83m ahead of the St Jago pair of Tavaugn Clarke and Daniel Lawrence with 5.63 and 5.30m, respectively.

St Jago secured the quinela in the boys’ Class Two triple jump courtesy of Brian Smith (13.26m) and Chadane Brown (12.24m). Delano Walters of Manchester High was third with 12.11m.

Meanwhile, Edwin Allen boys swept the top two positions in the Class Two shot put as Anthony Symile won with a throw of 14.51m ahead of Anthony Campbell with 12.93m. Shaquille White of Glenmuir was third with 11.95m.

The promising Roje Stona of St Jago was an easy winner of the Class One discuss throw with 54.97m, as his teammate Howard Beckford was second with 43.10 ahead of Everton Finley of Edwin Allen with 41.97m.

Coy Spence completed a wonderful day for St Jago as he won the Class One 400m hurdles in 54.77 seconds, edging Ramone Lindo of Vere Technical, who finished second in 54.78 seconds. Jevan Pottinger of St Jago was third with 59.29 seconds.

In a rare win for Christiana High, Shamar Brown won the Class Two 400m hurdles in 56.11 ahead of Dario Laing of Charlemont High with 57.26 seconds. Ronaldo Mighty of St Jago was third with 59.71 seconds.

On the girls’ side, Jody-Ann Petrie won the 400m hurdles open in 1:00.32 minutes ahead of the Edwin Allen pair of Gabriell McDonald (1:00.43) and Janiel Moore (1:01.92).

Vere’s Annishka McDonald took the Class Four high jump with 1.55m, while Ackelia Smith of Edwin Allen won the Class Three long jump with 5.83m.

The outstanding Tissana Hickling of St Jago won the triple jump open with 13.29m, while Shaday Hudson of Holmwood captured the Class Two shot put with 13.99m. St Jago’s Gabrielle Bailey took the Class One discus with 49.11m.
