Photos: KC gets ECG machine to test sports participants
Consultant Cardiologist Dr Rohan Wilks and school nurse Antoinette Henry look closely at the new electrocardiogram (ECG) machine strung up to an athlete. The machine was acquired recently by Kingston College in its efforts to determine the fitness of boys who attend the institution and who participate in sport. The move by the school was sparked by heart-related deaths of schoolboy athletes in recent years. Under the school’s programme, the resident nurse will be trained by Dr Wilks to operate the ECG machine and determine whether or not there are abnormalities. Every boy who is desirous of representing KC across all sports will be tested. Dr Wilks said at the presentation ceremony that he was encouraging other schools to follow KC’s lead in acquiring the machine and screening athletes in the interest of Jamaica.
