Granville edge Boys Club in desperate effort to avoid relegation
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending champions Granville United continued their fight to avoid relegation from the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation/Charley’s JB Rum Super League on Saturday with a contentious 2-1 win over semi-final contenders Montego Bay Boys Club in a third-round, cross-zone game at the UDC Field.
Montego Bay Boys Club played the final 30 minutes of the game with 10 players after former Granville United player Courtney Reid was sent off following a vicious tackle on an opponent.
The win was the second in a row for Granville United as they improved to 19 points, tied with sixth-placed Clarks Town who have played a game fewer, while Boys Club dropped a place to third on 24 points.
Faulkland FC replaced Boys Club in second spot with 26 points, after a 7-0 mauling of Three Miles River who became the first team that will be relegated at the end of the season.
With their backs to the wall and their Super League survival in the balance, Granville United came out fighting and took the lead in the eighth minute when Andrew Allen netted.
Romaine Lewis made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half after another fast start from Granville United.
Reid allowed the atmosphere to get the better of him in the 60th minute when he felled the Granville United player close to midfield, then aimed a punch at Referee Delroy Harding on his way off the field.
Five minutes later, Michael Thompson gave Boys Club some hope when he pounced on a ball that came back off the chest of the Granville United goalkeeper Zhavian Hutchinson, and slammed it in from close range.
That was the closest they would come as the Montego Bay team went down to their second loss of the season.
At Jarrett Park, Three Miles River held off Faulkland FC for 34 minutes before Neil Clarke opened the scoring with the first of his two goals as the Montego Bay team went on a scoring spree and led 4-0 at half-time.
Okeve Lewis doubled the lead three minutes later, Peter-Lee Vassell made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute from the penalty spot with the first of his double before Clarke completed his brace in the 45th minute.
Vassell got his second in the 56th minute, while Shawn Bradford made it six in the 69th minute and Jason Malcolm added a seventh in the 89th minute.
