Excitement galore in girls’ sprint hurdles
The girls’ sprint hurdles lived up to their billing yesterday as after thrilling spectators for the entire week of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, the favourites obliged with two of the four records broken.
Between the first round on Tuesday and Friday’s semi-finals, a few records were broken, but it was all to compete for yesterday with medals and points on the line.
Edwin Allen’s Gabrielle McDonald, who was fourth last year while representing Holmwood Technical, smashed the Class One 100m hurdles record running 13.12 seconds (-0.6m/s), while St Jago High’s Danae Nembhard made the best of her second chance, streaking away from the field to break the record in the Class Four 70m hurdles with 10.41 seconds into a negative head wind of 4.1 metres per second.
McDonald’s 13.12 seconds destroyed her own one-day -old record of 13.52 seconds set in Friday’s semi-finals, after Wolmer’s Janeek Brown’s 13.53 seconds had minutes earlier erased the 13.56 seconds set by Peta-Gay Williams in 2015.
All three medallists were under the old time as Brown, sixth last year, took the silver in 13.16 seconds, while Holmwood Technical’s Nicolee Foster, second last year, was third in 13.40 seconds.
After getting a break, being shown the yellow card, a warning, after stumbling out of the blocks, St Jago High’s Danae Nembhard made the best of her second chance, streaking away from the field to break the record in the Class Four 70m hurdles.
She ran 10.41 seconds into a negative head wind of 4.1 metres per second, erasing the 10.49 seconds set by Mellica Gordon in 2014.
Wolmer’s Krystyna Constantine was second with 10.71 seconds and Hydel High’s Shanoya Pottinger third in 10.79 seconds.
Yesterday was the first time in three rounds that the Class Two record was not broken, but there was a superb display of hurdling by favourite Britany Anderson of Vere Technical as she won in 13.12 seconds (-1.7m/s), after running 13.04 (0.4m/s) to win her semi-final heat a day earlier.
Shannette Allison of Holmwood Technical took the silver in 13.34 seconds, with defending champion Daszay Freeman third in 13.42 seconds.
The Class Two event had promised to be the best of the four yesterday as Anderson and Allison had alternated breaking the record throughout week.
Allison, the bronze medallist last year, had run 13.30 (0.3m/s) on Tuesday to break the 13.38 seconds set in 2013 by Peta-Gaye Williams of Camperdown High. minutes after Anderson also went under the old record after she won the first heat in 13.37 seconds (0.0m/s).
In the Class Three 80m hurdles yesterday, St Jago’s Crystal Morrison, who broke the record in the semi-finals on Friday, held off Excelsior High’s Ackera Nugent to win the gold medal, only managing to separate herself after what appeared to be a touching of hands five metres from the line, which saw Nugent veer to her left.
Morrison won in 11.22 seconds (-2.9m/s) with Nugent being timed in 11.43 seconds, and Edwin Allen High’s Lisandra Brown taking the bronze in 11.47 seconds.
The St Jago athlete broke the record in Friday’s semis when she ran 10.98 seconds (0.0m/s) to lower the mark of 11.10 seconds set last year by Britany Anderson of Vere Technical.
