My Kingston – Jordan McClure
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
Climbing the coconut tree in the backyard.
What’s the most memorable meal that you have enjoyed in Kingston?
At a small ital shop in Vineyard Town; the food was served in a calabash.
What would you do if you were mayor of Kingston for a day?
Institute a day where reggae/dancehall would be paraded and recognised similarly to soca at a Carnival road march.
What would be your recommendations to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
Go to two parties — one uptown and then one downtown. Meet the people and immerse in the culture.
Eat a patty, drink a coconut water and go to the beach, with a six-pack of cold Red Stripe beer.
Do jailhouse recordings laugh in the face of justice or do they offer a rehabilitative outlet for one’s musical creativity?
I am simply a music producer, not a member of the justice system. I am in no position to determine what is correct or incorrect where that is concerned.
The historic success of Chance The Rapper — the Grammy-winning product of the independent format — represents an influential shift in the music industry. How should traditional record labels adjust accordingly?
It is extremely impressive what Chance The Rapper has achieved, but it does not take away from the fact that record labels and publishing houses continue to play an integral role in the successes of many artistes. Yes, there is an increase in independent successes based on technology, making everything and everyone more accessible, but him achieving that level of independent success is, but not limited to, the result of a whole lot of work and a whole lot of luck.
I don’t believe record labels need to do much more than to continue to move with technology. There is always an exception to every rule, in this case ‘The Rapper’ happened to be the one who by ‘chance’ slipped through the cracks.
What’s your favourite call-and-response moment to date, from your years on the party scene?
Everything Jamaican. We have such a diverse culture, and such great and innovative ways of building a vibe.
Diner en Blanc is said to be an opportunity for residents to celebrate one’s city. Why does the misunderstood Kingston edition remain such a polarising affair?
This year was my first experience with Diner en Blanc and to me it was very unique in the way it was executed. Looking from the outside in it can seem a bit posh — the all-white attire and the fancy decorations — but being a patron I’ve come to understand that it really is what you make it. Some people go for elaborate attire and table decorations while others choose to be simple and comfortable.
In any case, what is life without new and exciting experiences? I will certainly be back next year.
Which late recording artiste’s virtual reality concert performance would you gladly sit through?
Bob Marley or Michael Jackson.
What’s the one vice you’d be hard-pressed to give up?
Well, for some it could be considered a vice and some a virtue, but I would have to say for me it would be my high level of self-criticism. I tend to be very hard on myself where it concerns anything I am serious about, for example my work, and I sometimes get disappointed when I don’t achieve the highest level of success, but this is how I keep motivated.
