Azar, Harrison top Guardian Life Junior Tennis Championships
JOHN Azar Jr and Jenna Harrison captured the boys’ and girls’ singles titles at the 2017 Guardian Life Junior Tennis Championships that ended at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Sunday.
The 14-year-old Azar Jr, seeded at number one in the boys’ Under-18 singles, defeated second-seeded Romeo Edwards in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. It was also his first major win in this category.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ Open final, top seeded 14-year-old Harrison, who trailed 2-5, rallied to level the scores at 5-5 before winning the first set against third-seeded Moesha Fox 7-5, then crushed her 6-0 in the second set to win handsomely.
Due to the lack of entries, the 18-and-under singles for girls was played as an open event.
The boys’ 16-and-under final was won by second-seeded Jordan Luck, who came from a set down to defeat top seed Richard Barnett 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 (super tiebreaker).
This was an unfinished game that started on Sunday and was completed on Monday due to heavy rainfall on Sunday.
Second-seeded Keyondre Clarke came from a set down to upset top seeded Daniel Azar in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 (super tiebreaker) to capture the 14 and under boys’ singles title.
Peta-Gaye Graham, seeded at number two, won the 14 and under girls’ singles final when she defeated unseeded Re-Ann Barclay in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Top-seeded nine-year-old Kaiel Casserly captured the 12-and-under boys’ singles title after defeating second seed Joshua Haye in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Glendon Gordon, of Guardian Life said he was very pleased with the performances of the players.
“It’s a way of giving back something to the society and Guardian Life has made its commitment to continue its sponsorship of this very important event,” Gordon said.
Tournament Director Llockett McGregor thanked Guardian Life for its sponsorship; which is in its 17th-consecutive year.
