Boys’ Town win big as Jamalco get relegated
Boys’ Town came from behind to whip Reno 4-1 in a result that relegated Jamalco FC following their 1-1 home draw with Harbour View in the penultimate round of the Red Stripe Premier League yesterday.
Boys’ Town started the day just above the relegation zone, in 10th spot on 32 points, and following a lacklustre first-half display at the Barbican Field. They came alive in the second half and basically secured another year of top-flight football.
The Red Brigade, as they are popuparly called, climbed a spot into ninth on 35 points courtesy of goals from Michael Campbell (47th), Jamiel Hardware (52nd), Shamar Nicholson (57th), and promising substitute Jahvon Howell (85th). Earlier Craig Foster had given Reno a 45th minute lead.
With Boys’ Town moving to 35 points, one above 10th-placed Waterhouse, who lost 1-4 to Portmore United, new boys Jamalco from Clarendon were relegated in this their first season in the Premier League.
Jamalco inched to 30 points, two behind Maverley/Hughenden on 32 points, and with only one game remaining, they cannot catch Waterhouse sitting on 34 points. But Maverley/Hughenden are still alive heading into the final set of matches on Sunday.
It was an evenly contested game in the first half and, as they have been doing all season, Boys’ Town missed some easy chances and it looked as though it would have been another frustrating day for them.
Xavian Virgo struck the post from a free kick before Shamar Nicholson missed a sitter at the back post where he failed to turn in a Hardware shot-turn-cross.
They were made to pay as Foster slotted home a cross from St Elizabeth Technical High School player Demar James in the 45th minute. But the home team would hit back, and hit back hard.
Captain Campbell pounced on a cheeky through ball by Nicholson and fired home from an angle in the 47th minute and five minutes later, Hardware volleyed home after his initial free kick crashed against the upright, but was kept alive by Ranique Muir who teed him up for a second bite of the cherry which he took gleefully.
After missing a couple of chances, Nicholson notched his 14th goal of the season expertly placing his shot wide of the advancing goalkeeper, before Howell brilliantly volleyed home.
Meanwhile, at Spanish Town Prison Oval, Maverley/Hughenden battled to a 0-0 draw with Humble Lion and kept their slim survival hopes alive. Maverley remained in 11th spot on 32 points, while Humble Lion are second with 58 points.
Waterhouse suffered a massive home defeat crashing 1-4 to Portmore United and slipping a spot to 10th on 34 points. Portmore remained in fifth on 52 points.
In a dress rehearsal of a play-off match, Tivoli Gardens trounced Arnett Gardens 3-0 at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex. Elton Thompson scored a hat-trick in the 23rd, 60th and 62nd minutes.
And leaders the University of the West Indies (UWI) and champions Montego Bay United played to a 0-0 stalemate. UWI stayed top with 59 points and on course to secure the million-dollar prize, while Montego Bay are fourth with 53 points.
