Best Product 2017 Nominee: Great Desserts and Foods — Fruit Cake, Lemon, Blueberry and Strawberry Cheesecakes

Principals: Raphael Satchell & Adrian Haye

E-mail: greatdessertsandfoods@gmail.com

Telephone number: 771-5500

Address: 28 Haining Road, Kingston 5

We made these products because… I love food and always look forward to the last bite, and so I would save the best section for last! With cakes, that meant the edges or the crust. I wanted to have a cake that I could enjoy from beginning to end. In the case of cheesecake, I also wanted to have the cake portioned in a way that it would not be cloying. When I started to contemplate such a product, in 2009, I realised that many people felt the same, and so I decided to work on developing one that could be made available to market for myself and others who felt the same. So the journey began to create a cake that I could have the last-bite experience from beginning to end.

Our major challenge is… automating the creation of the crust of the cheesecake, as well as marketing (not a strength). They are currently made by hand, which can be a bit tedious.

The issue remains… at this time I purchase raw materials weekly or as needed, which costs more, but that works for us at the moment.

The cheesecakes became available to the public in… May 2012. The Fruitcake Bliss Bar first became available in December 2016.

The products are available at… Loshusan Supermarket with other retailers on the way. We also do products to order.

The response to the products has been… generally great. Customers have given us an “A+ + 100%” for our cheesecakes. We’ve had regular customers who did not enjoy cheesecake before they had ours. Our fruitcake has been described by many as one of the best cakes they’ve ever had.

Our core customers are... for the cheescake, teenagers to young professionals, primarily females. Fruitcake – professional men and women from various age groups.

We plan to grow the business to become… A global distributor of innovative, quality products that are made in Jamaica.

Our first breakthrough came in… 2017 when we got into Loshusan Supermarket.

Jamaicans should support my products because… they are made in Jamaica, great-tasting, portion-sized, provide value for money, and are guaranteed to be of a consistent quality that they can enjoy. Plus, we recently established a team and resumed operations in December 2016 (after stopping in 2015), where we provide fruitcakes to customers by order. We have developed a line of products that we think will be enjoyed globally. We’ve received positive responses from distributors locally and overseas and are hoping to convert the interest into deals that would see our products widely distributed.

Our products are successful because… we maintain a high standard as it relates to quality and taste. They are perfectly portioned and can be enjoyed on the go.

If we knew then what we know now… we would not have taken a break. I also would not have attempted to be a one-man show. I would have formed a team and together pushed the business to higher heights.
