ATHENS, Greece (AFP) — The Greek government will propose a law allowing unmarried adults to choose their sex for IDs and other official documents regardless of how they were registered at birth, a spokeswoman told AFP on Thursday.

The government published a draft law this week and hopes to file it with parliament by mid-June after discussions with civil groups, a spokeswoman told AFP.Under the proposed law, unmarried adults would not have to prove having undergone a sex-change operation in order to request a different gender, as is often the case currently.Rights groups claim that such a requirement violates an individual’s right to privacy and self-determination as laid out in the European Convention on Human Rights.They also welcomed a move they said would put an end to unnecessary surgical operations. Under the proposal, adults seeking to be registered with a different gender would be allowed to request a new civil status and associated documents, such as IDs and birth certificates.But some transgender activist groups said they would like to see the law extended to minors and married adults as well.
