Football Labour of Love to benefit former Arnett Gardens player ‘Gorilla’ Davey
The Annual “Bring Back The Love” After Labour Day charity football match hosted by Masters and Celebrities group will have an additional beneficiary this year.
The proceeds from the annual charity game usually benefits basic schools in the Corporate Area; however, it will be extended to assist former Arnett Gardens FC player Desmond “Gorilla” Davey this year.Davey suffered a stroke three years ago and has been in rehabilitation ever since. The former Arnett Gardens strongman walks with the assistance of a cane and currently requires daily physiotherapy. The cost of therapy has taken a toll on the finances of the former player as well as his family, so the benevolence of the Masters and Celebrities could not have come at a better time.Speaking at the launch at Cuddy’z Bar on Tuesday, Donald Davy, brother of Desmond said: “I have tried to do my best to help him and to be there for him in every way, to help him to make a comeback. Sometimes I don’t have it (money), but I still make the effort to make him comfortable. He has been doing a lot of exercises and he is coming on slowly but surely. He still need to do a lot more exercises and he needs vitamins to help his recovery. The help from Mr Busy Campbell and others will go a far way.”Chief organiser of the event Clive “Busy” Campbell says it is time to put back on the table the idea of setting up a foundation to assist former footballers and football administrators.“Some time ago I had written a letter to the former chairman of the PLCA (Premier League Clubs Association) at the time, recommending that a foundation be formed to assist former footballers and football administrators, who may have fallen upon hard times. When we met he was enthusiastic about the proposal; unfortunately, it did not get off the ground. I am determined to get this initiative up and running,” he declared.“Several persons have already volunteered to take on the task, this must be done. Ladies and gentlemen, Desmond Davey is one of the reasons why,” Campbell emphasised. The charity game, which will be played at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Tuesday, May 23, will be between an Entertainers team and a Sponsors and Celebrities team, starting at 5:00 pm.Some of the players already confirmed include former Arnett Gardens players Byron Earle, Kevin “Pele” Wilson and Cornell Chin Sue; former Reggae Boyz, Ian “Pepe” Goodison and Ricardo “Bibi” Gardner; senior Reggae Boyz head coach Theodore “Tappa” Whitmore; and former KSAFA President Rudolph Speid among a host of others. The cost of admission is $400 for adults and $100 for children. Children under 12 years will be admitted free of cost.— Dwayne Richards
