Nine arrested, 4 guns seized during flood rains
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Nine people were arrested and four firearms seized as the police conducted operations in Clarendon, Kingston and St Catherine during yesterday’s torrential flood rains.
The first arrest was made about 11:00 am at the May Pen bus park in Clarendon, after the lawmen reportedly seized one 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol with a magazine containing eight 9mm rounds.According to the contabulary’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), officers held a 27-year-old man, “they suspected was about to commit a crime”. His name has been withheld.Then, lawmen searched a house in Osbourne Store, Four Paths in Clarendon about 3:00 pm and found a 9mm Sarsilmaz pistol hidden in a sofa in the living room. The gun was loaded with three 9mm rounds. A 26-year-old man, who the police did not name, was subsequently taken into custody.By 6:30 pm a team of officers searched a house in the Egypt Housing Development in Trench Town, Kingston when one 9mm Taurus pistol, loaded with a magazine containing three 9mm cartridges, was seized. No arrest was made.The efforts of the lawmen climaxed in Spanish Town about 9:00 pm, when a team of officers conducted operations in the Corletts Avenue area. The search of a premises revealed one Kalashnikov (AK 47) assault rifle along with 23 7.62 cartridges in a makeshift kitchen. Seven men were taken into custody in connection with the seizure.Newly appointed Commissioner of Police, George Quallo, has lauded the respective teams for their efforts.“Our hard working and dedicated officers must be commended. This demonstrates the true resolve of the men and women under my command. We (JCF) remain committed to removing the guns off our nation’s streets and creating safer communities,” he said.
