Sanchez stars gospel concert
Reggae singer Sanchez brought the house down at the recent Labour Day concert at Emancipation Park in New Kingston.
The event was hosted by Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport ,and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission. The show was loaded with great gospel-oriented performers, including the current praise and worship rave Kevin Downswell, Stitchie, the revivalist -based Kukudoo, Joan Fleming, and Lubert Levy. However, Sanchez brought the event to a climax with a memorable performance.Singing hits like
I Must Tell Jesus, Healing Time, Across the Bride, and
Amazing Grace, as well as his own reggae/gospel standards like
Never Dis the Man, Praise Him and
Who Is This Man, Sanchez reminded the audience why he became a major force in reggae during the 1980s and ’90s.Downswell, another stand out performer, brought the crowd to its feet with his usual selections, including
If It’s Not You and
You Make Me Stronger.Kukudoo got everybody dancing with his revivalist-flavoured set which comprised
After All, Warning, and
King David.Stitchie, Lubert Levy, newcomer Kareen Gregory, and Joan Fleming also delivered great sets. The show also featured a number of emerging acts, including Radical Weapons; Levy’s Heritage, children of Lubert Levy; and former JCDC gospel winners Marsha Jarrett, Taville Henry, Erica Lumsden and Diamora Noel Walker.– Balford Henry
