Samory-I mines Black Gold
Black Gold, the first album from roots singer Samory-I, will be released on July 14 by Black Dub Music, a label owned by Rory Gilligan, who also produced the 13-song set.
Three songs — Take Me Oh Jah, African Daughter and Rasta Nuh Gangsta — have already been released.
Black Gold also includes a cover of Is It Because I’m Black, which was first done by American soul singer Syl Johnson.Keyboardist Franklyn “Bubbler” Waul, bassist Donald Dennis and drummer Kirk Bennett are some of the musicians who played on Black Gold.The 26-year-old Samory-I (given name Samory Tour Frazer) is from the Kencot neighbourhood in Kingston.Last year, as a precursor to
Black Gold, he toured Europe, performing at the Reeds Festival in Switzerland, Reggae Jam in Germany, and Reggae Geel in Belgium.
