This year Argentina commemorated the 207th anniversary of the May Revolution, the historic turn-point after which the country began the path toward independence — Argentina’s National Day. The Embassy of Argentina in Jamaica celebrated the milestone anniversary with an evening that showcased a lively cultural collaboration between Jamaica and Argentine music and wine.

Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to Jamaica Ariel Fernández, his wife Helene Hagen-Larsen, and their two children, Joakim and Alexander, opened the official residence to host diplomats, government officials, Argentine residents, Jamaican businessmen, and a strong presence of culture and sports representatives.

Upon welcoming guests, Ambassador Fernández gratefully addressed the audience and highlighted the importance of collaboration between both countries and the cultural influence Jamaica has in Argentina. In addition, he highlighted the advancement in bilateral relations which continue to evolve year after year.

He also touched upon the great achievements that have been made through music, as a universal language, which was an introduction to the evening’s musical selections that included violin and piano performances of Astor Piazzolla pieces such as Milonga sin palabras and Oblivion by violinist Steven Woodham and pianist Mickel Gordon. Also, a lively performance by Tony Rebel, Seretse Small and Queen Ifrica of reggae interpretations and sounds kept the audience feeling the rhythm.

Traditional empanadas and “choripan” bites accompanied the Argentine wine selection to complement the celebratory night.
