For people who stutter
Dear Editor,
My heart was filled with joy when a relative e-mailed me your article, ‘When your child stutters’ published in the All Woman magazine of the Jamaica Observer on June 14. I am glad that stuttering is receiving attention in Jamaica.
While I agree with everything stated by Dr Anona Griffith, who is obviously a dedicated speech therapy professional, there is one point I wish to add: It is important that children receive speech therapy as early as possible because this increases the chances that they will not have this problem for life. I recommend the information and free help available from the Stuttering Foundation ( www.stammeringhelp.org) not only for parents of child stammerers but also for older people who stutter.
I knew other kids who, like myself, stuttered in school. We used to joke that our speech was a lot more fluent when speaking patois.
