On a weekend that featured fair weather, William Knibbs topped the Men & Men Senior 0-6 category in the 36-hole Alliance Flights Classic.

The tournament took place at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club last weekend. Knibbs finished the event in fine form with a remarkable 67 on day one of the competition and added nine strokes to Sunday’s score for a total of 143.

In comparison to his first round of nine pars, seven birdies and two bogeys, Knibbs’ scorecard on Sunday reflected eight pars, four birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys — enough to snag the top spot in the two-day tournament.

Jonathan Newnham was second with 145 (71, 74) and Mark Newnham captured the third place with 155 (79, 76). The three top finishers all have a place on the National Team to the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships which is scheduled for July 30-August 5 at The Lakes golf course in the Dominican Republic.

The Men’s 7-12 category saw Bruce Lopez and Clifton Johnson ending the tournament with identical scores (178). Third in the group was Montego Bay-based Richard White on 181.

Brandon Chin snagged first place in the 13-18 group with 178, ahead of André Foote and Orville Marshall. Paul Gray had a two-day total of 188 and emerged the champion in the 19-24 grouping. Gray had a second day score of 80, which was 28 shots better than his first round.

In the Men’s Super Senior event Michael Boyd led the way on Saturday with 75, which included nine pars, six bogeys, and three birdies. His second day score of 87 sealed his win with a total of 162, ahead of Lincoln Williams (168) and Dave Lyn (170). Maurice Foster was the winner in the Men’s Super Senior 13-24 category with 175, ahead of Howard McKenzie (189).

Diane Hudson walked away with the Women’s 13-24 title (189) and Yadires Fonseca (203) was second.

National Junior Team representative Sebert Walker played steady rounds of 77, 76 (153) to emerge the Junior Under-17 champion ahead of Jack Stein (161) and Luke Lindo (188), who were in a playoff for one spot on the National Junior Team. The members will leave the island for Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday to compete in the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships.

Robert Chin, vice-president, Alliance Investment Management Limited, expressed his pleasure at being affiliated with this qualifying event. In his words, “Alliance is always pleased to be involved in any sporting endeavour, and especially so when it pertains to the development of young talent.”

The Alliance Flights Classic is the second qualifying event on the Jamaica Golf Association’s 2017-2018 calendar.
