Jamaican swimmers to contest 13 finals at CCCAN
KINGSTON Jamaica – The Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Championships got off to a colourful start today with the opening ceremony featuring lots of steel pan of course, being in Trinidad &Tobago.
Jamaica was in session number one, event #1 by way of Britney Williams in the 800 metre Freestyle, where she finished fifth putting Jamaica on the scoreboard.
Session #2 began with the Sabrina Lyn in the 11 – 12-year-old Girls 200m Breaststroke which she won in 3:03.89 but will have to wait on heat #2 this evening to know her fate.
In the 15 – 17 Girls version Jamaica’s CARIFTA-standout Bryanna Renaurt qualified for this evening’s final seeded third.
The 50m Backstroke series was lead off by Paig’e Lewis who was outside of her personal best of 35.91 seconds with a 36.60 and missed the finals. Jamaica’s other 11 – 12-year-old entrant, Zaneta Alvaranga, produced a good swim in 33.65 seeding third in this evening’s finals.
The 11 – 12 Boys were next with Joshua Alleyne registering a 33.29 seconds to be first alternate for this evening’s finals with top seed Nathaniel Thomas in 29.99 seconds, just outside of the meet record of 29.83.
Jamaica’s female 13 -14-year-old entrants in the series were Brianna Anderson in 32.31 for a personal best and fourth seed in the final and Gabrianna Banks 33.68 for the second alternate spot.
Kyle Sinclair was the only 13 -14-year-old boy and he made too secured a lane in tonight’s final with his 30.10 seconds. And in the 15 – 17-year-old Girl section, Angara Sinclair was in good shape lowering her entry time from 32.12 to a 30.75 claiming the third seed in tonight’s final.
In the final individual series of the morning, the 100m Butterfly, Sabrina Lyn registered a 1:07.42 for the number three seed with Alvaranga a close 1:07.87 for fourth seed in the finals. Thomas produced a 1:04.63 to be seeded second in the finals.
Emily MacDonald in her first event of the day produced a 1:07.64 in the 13 – 14 Girls Butterfly for sixth seed going into tonight’s finals. Brianna Anderson was not her best and produced a 1:13 .24 and missed out on making the finals. Kyle Sinclair also missed the finals in this event clocking a 1:04.56 in his heat. 15 – 17 Angara Sinclair also did not make the finals with her 1:09.69 seconds. Jessie Marsh (15-17 Boy) managed to ease into the finals seeded eight with is 58.10 seconds.
British-based 18 & Over Girl, Kelsie Campbell, was in fine form registering a brisk 1:03.67 to start from lane four as the top seed flirting with the meet record of 1:03.18. But in the 18 & Over, Sidrel Williams was unable to secure a spot in the finals.
In the final event of the preliminaries the 11 – 12 Mixed Gender 200m Freestyle Relay the Jamaican quarter of (Zaneta Alvaranga, Paig’e Lewis, Joshua Alleyne and Nathaniel Thomas) secured their chances of a medal, winning their heat and securing the second seed in tonight’s finals.
