KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition Spokesman on Transport Mikael Phillips says good sense has prevailed in the matter concerning the recent increase of toll rates on the North South Highway.

In a statement from the People’s National Party (PNP), he said it is unfortunate that the Prime Minister Andrew Holness administration had to be pressured into doing what is right for the Jamaican people.

“It cannot be that the people of this country cannot hold the government to their word, the minister cannot impose a permanent increase after promising a temporary one, that is deception, “Phillips said.

He pointed out that if it were not for the pressure brought to bear by the Opposition, the increased toll rate would continue to affect thousands of motorists in Classes 1, 3 and 4.

Last week Governor of the Bank of Jamaica Brian Wynter told Parliament’s Economy and Productions Committee that coin supplies are now in adequate quantities.

According to Phillips, transport minister Mike Henry, who said the increase would have been temporary had an obligation to the travelling public to roll back the charges immediately as the coin shortage had eased.
