ONLINE READERS COMMENT: A criminal record should not stop approval of a gun licence
Dear editor,
The current Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) investigations, so far, reveal that people with criminal records have received firearms licences.
Our cowering corruption-enabling society is now up in arms that such a thing happened.
It was even revealed that one firearm holder served time in prison in a foreign country. Now, should that Jamaican citizen be denied a firearms licence in Jamaica?
But, should a firearm applicant’s criminal record justify not granting a licence?
I don’t think having a criminal record should be the sole reason to deny an applicant a firearm licence. What about reformation and redemption?
For example, if a firearm applicant committed a crime then pays his debt to society.
Years have passed and by all indicators this person has turned his/her life around, is now a model citizen and an asset to his/ her community. Is it fair that such a firearm applicant not be considered for a firearm licence?
I think there should be a process and after extensive review they should get the licence.
People make mistakes, people change and as a society we should not hinder the progress of those who truly reform.
I think the laws governing the issuance of firearm licences should be amended to reflect today’s reality. Having a criminal record shouldn’t doom someone who has changed for life.
