J’can killed in ‘confrontation’ with New York cops
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A Jamaican man living in the US was fatally shot by police officers in his apartment in Bronx last week Wednesday.
Foreign media reported that the officers were conducting a wellness check requested by his landlord, who was concerned after not seeing 31-year-old Miguel Richards for a while.
Richards, who was reportedly armed with a small knife and a silver toy gun with a laser scope hidden behind his back, was in an hour-long standoff inside his apartment before officers pulled their triggers firing 16 shots.
His father, Belvett, 61, said he was a university exchange student from Jamaica, who was studying information technology, and the two last spoke about a month ago, he added, and everything seemed okay.
The Bronx resident, who is said to have no prior arrests and no documented history of mental illness, is the first murdered person recorded via a police body camera, which officers began wearing in April.
