Sol banking on Hand Cart song
EMERGING deejay Sol has sparked a ne w dance craze with Hand Cart .
The comedic single has caused much talk in the dancehall space, as several dancers have begun using the carts as props to perform.
He told Splash that the concept is a hit with fans.
“Whenever the Hand Cart segment of dancehall starts, everyone take out their phones and start to record the action. It is like everybody come out to see the cart. The handcart itself is a star inna dancehall, that is why we gone viral,” he said.
Sol said female dancers are not comfortable if the selectors don’t play the record at weekly sessions.
“If the selector takes too long to call for the Hand Cart song, the females will start shouting on the top of their voice. At first, the main reason was to promote the song by bringing a Hand Cart to the dance. But after seeing the impact it created, I have to big up the dancers. I was surprised and excited when I saw the high-energy the Hand Cart brings to the dancehall space… Shelly Belly even dance on the cart until it damage,” he said.
Ironically, the deejay said a hand cart played a pivotal role in his life.
“At first it was just a toy for me and my brother, but it was a way of hustle for my father to put food on the table for our family,” he said. “Whenever I write a song I always try to come up with a hot topic, and the rhythm gave me a kinda 90s vibe and a downtown Kingston vibe. So since I associate with downtown and get a lot of support from West Kingston, I looked for one of the most relevant and most popular topics and that was the handcart. Anybody who pays attention will see the value that a Hand Cart presents to the people of downtown Kingston.”
Hand cart was released earlier this year and is produced by Krayv and Jay Crazie Records
Sol, given name, Andre Rowe, who was born in Kingston. He is a past student of St Jago High in Spanish Town, St Catherine. He migrated to Texas in the United States and later released his debut single in 2010.
“I then relocated to Virginia and my fan base began to grow. However, my thoughts were never far from Jamaica so I returned to the island to pursue music,” he said.
Sol is known for other tracks like Wine on Me, Feel So Good and Weatherman.
