UPDATE: Committal hearing set for Haile Clacken murder case
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Attorney Dwight Reece, who is representing the accused in the Haile Clacken murder case, said that he is expecting that at the next court date on October 25, the planned committal hearing will be possible.
He said that it was scheduled for Wednesday September 27 but did not take place because, while it was understood that all the statements were available, the investigator in the matter later revealed that he has additional statements to be submitted.
Reece said, however, that the investigator was not able to make it to court on Wednesday.
A committal hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence to take the matter to the circuit court, where trial is done.
The accused, Guardsman security guard Shawn Cole, is answering to a murder charge for the shooting death of St Elizabeth resident Haile Clacken.
Police reports are that Clacken, who suffered from bipolar disorder, climbed on an armoured truck in the Junction area of the parish, earlier this year, and was allegedly shot and killed by Cole who was driving the vehicle.
Reece said that the matter was heard at the Balaclava Courthouse on Wednesday.
The Jamaica Observer had inaccurately reported that this month’s court date would have been on September 11 and changed to the parish court in Santa Cruz.
Reece said that at this stage the matter is likely to continue at the Balaclava Courthouse.
The parish of St Elizabeth has three courthouses- Balaclava, Santa Cruz and Black River.
Meanwhile, Cole’s $1 million bail was extended on Wednesday.
