Holness expected to announce date for by-elections
Prime Minister Andrew Holness is this evening expected to say when by-elections to fill vacancies in three constituencies will be held.
Up to late Saturday there was no official word from the hierarchy of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party regarding details of the meeting, but sources told the Jamaica Observer that a rally will be held in the town of Annotto Bay, St Mary South Eastern, and is expected to begin around 6 o’clock. Holness, one source said, would speak around 8:00.
Resignations by veteran members of parliament Portia Simpson Miller, the former president of the People’s National Party (PNP) and retired prime minister, as well as former Cabinet minister Dr Omar Davies, necessitated elections in the St Andrew South Western seat which Simpson Miller represented, and St Andrew South where Dr Davies was for several years the political representative.
The death in August of Member of Parliament for St Mary South Eastern Dr Winston Green created a vacancy in that seat.
Political sources said that Holness will likely tell supporters that the elections will be held on a day during the week that begins October 22.
All three seats were held by the PNP.
