Samuda to meet with disgruntled coffee growers
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Karl Samuda is tomorrow scheduled to meet with members of the Blue Mountain Coffee Growers’ Association who last month staged a protest at the minister’s office over the current price of coffee.
According to a media advisory from the ministry today, Samuda will present a plan of action to address various issues including the current price of the commodity.
The coffee growers last month reported that the current selling price of coffee stood at $6,000 per box, which they said could not cover their input costs.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Donovan Stanberry who met with the farmers explained that the buyers and exporters of Blue Mountain Coffee had explained to the ministry in a meeting held some weeks ago that prices for the current crop year would be determined following a meeting with coffee importers in Japan.
