JOHN Chin and Jenna Harrison captured the respective boys’ and girls’ singles titles at the 16th staging of the Guardian Life Open Junior Tennis Championships, which ended at Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Sunday.

Chin, seeded number four in the Boys’ Under-16 singles, defeated top seed Damani Cain in a hard-fought match which saw him winning the super tiebreaker set 10-7 after both players had shared one set apiece. Chin won the first set 6-1, while Cain took the second 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker).

In the semi-finals, Chin had defeated the number two seed Romeo Edwards in straight sets 7-6, 6-1, while Cain had come from a set down before knocking away third-seed Keyondre Clarke 4-6, 6-3, and 10-8 in the super tiebreaker set.

Harrison, seeded at number two in the Girls’ Open singles, proved too strong for the fourth-seeded Moesha Fox. Harrison was convincing in winning 6-0, 6-2.

The girls’ semi-finals had seen Harrison registering a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win over fourth seed Hayley McNair, while Fox worked her way easily past unseeded Olivia Simms 6-0, 6-1.

The 14-year-old Chin said after his victory over Cain, that after easily winning the first set he lost control of the second set, allowing his opponent back into the match.

“In the super tiebreaker set, I concentrated by working the ball around… from where I took control of the match,” said the hard-hitting left-hander Chin.

Cain said Chin played very well in a tough match.

“I think I fought well and it was also a very good match between us, but the next time we meet I am confident of turning the tables on him,” said the 15-year-old Cain.

Harrison said she moved the ball around to keep control of the match.

“It was really a very good match, despite the scores that looked easy. In the second set she got her shots going, but I got my revenge, as she has beaten me on many occasions in tournaments,” said Harrison.

Fox said her game is a bit down at the moment.

“She played a very attacking game in the first set, but in the second I began gaining some momentum on her. However, she still was in control of the match as I need to work on game,” Fox said.

The Boys’ 14 and Under singles final was won by Blake Shoucair, who came from a set down to defeat Russell Fairman 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 in the super tiebreak set.

Alicia Pairman captured the Girls’ 14 and Under round-robin singles title with three wins with Gabriel Bernard second with two wins and a loss.

Arjan Trehan captured the Boys’ 12 and Under singles title with an 8-4 win over Joel Villoria, while the consolation singles title was won by Joseph De Peralto who beat Dylan Madden 8-2.

Eva Pinchas was the winner of the Girls’ 12 and Under round-robin singles title by winning her four matches, with Thandie Sampson second with three wins and a defeat.

Glendon Gordon, vice-president of individual life sales at Guardian Life, said it was a very good tournament that produced some exciting matches.

He congratulated the winners and the other participants and said he saw talents for the future.

Gordon said Guardian Life Limited will continue its support and sponsorship of the Junior Open Tennis Championship.
