CLARENDON, Jamaica — Residents from the small district of Goshen in Mocho, Clarendon are calling on their political representatives to address the poor condition of Morgan’s Lane, which borders the constituencies of Clarendon North Central and Clarendon South Western.

The constituencies are represented by veteran Member of Parliament (MP) Pearnel Charles of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and MP Noel Arscott of the People’s National Party (PNP), respectively.

Morgan’s Lane has been in disrepair for decades, despite roadwork some years ago to fix an adjacent corridor in another section of the community called ‘Jungle’, which is in Arscott’s constituency.

One resident, who told OBSERVER ONLINE that the road has been a source of contention among political representatives for the two constituencies for decades, also called on Councillor Romaine Morris (JLP, Mocho Division) to address the situation.

Other residents of the community took to social media today asking how long they must suffer from the poor condition of the road.

“I have been living here for 27 years and all that takes place is promises and nothing fulfilled… the road can’t be walked on if it rains as it is impassable,” one resident said, further contending that Parliamentarians should do better because the “people dem vote unno in”.

Another resident argued that the road in ‘Jungle’ has been fixed by Arscott so it’s up to Charles to fix Morgan’s lane. “Jungle deh over Arscott constituency and him fix there, so you see that Pearnel is the issue,” she argued.

Meanwhile, others reasoned that the community has been receiving copious amounts of rain this week and it has made traversing the road impossible, whether it be on wheels or on foot.

“Can u imagine you go May Pen to get ur groceries and no taxi will turn off with you because of the road condition whether its rain or shine and you can’t blame them cause we not fixing their vehicle,” another argued.

Morgan’s Lane is only one of the corridors in need of repair, according to residents. “Empty promises to the people of Goshen … it’s not just Morgan’s Lane, Old Ground (another road in the community adjoining Morgan’s Lane) too!” said one occupant of the Clarendon neighbourhood.

“Come to think of it, the community of Goshen has no roads!” she added. Still, another resident said it “seems like we’ve all been quiet too long”.

Charles, who now holds the position of Speaker in the House of Representatives, has been MP for Clarendon North Central since 2002, while Arscott has been representing Clarendon South Western since 2007.
