KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Fraud Squad of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has arrested and charged four people — including an acting court assistant — following investigations into alleged corruption at the divorce section of the Supreme Court, since the start of the month.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck last month had to withdraw comments he made broad brushing the entire court staff after news surfaced that bogus divorce documents were being issued to members of the public from the court offices.

Charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence is 40-year-old Camille Whyte, acting court assistant of Leris Close, Meadowbrook, Kingston 19.

She was offered bail in the sum of $100,000 with surety and is to appear in the St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, October 26.

Whyte is accused of collecting $20,000 in 2015 to file divorce documents and for a Divorce Absolute to be granted. However, when the complainant was not furnished with the documents a refund was requested. The money was not returned. A report was made to the Fraud Squad and Whyte arrested and charged.

The charges of forgery, uttering forged document and conspiracy to defraud were also proffered against 44 year-old Artnel Sampson a construction worker of Portsmouth, St Catherine, 35 year-old Wayne Annakie, sound engineer of Beachwood Road, Longsville Park in Clarendon and 36 year-old Shervin Levy, farmer of Saw Mill district, Christiana in Manchester.

Samspon was offered bail in the sum of $100,000 with surety to appear in the St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, November 2. Meanwhile, Annakie and Levy were offered bail in the same amount and are to appear in the St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, October 26.

The police are appealing to people to use the formal system when attempting to acquire a divorce.
