KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Health, in an effort to control the presence of the Aedes aegyti mosquitoes, which transmit the zika virus, is launching its ZIKA Airs Project (ZAP) tomorrow.

According to an advisory from the Ministry this morning, ZAP is being launched as a component of USAID’s Zika response throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

The ministry said the project, which will be held at the JEWEL in Paradise Cove Runaway Bay, St Ann, will also target other diseases such as dengue and Chikungunya. Health Minister, Christopher Tufton is expected to speak at the launch.

“In recent years, Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean have witnessed the emergence of several mosquito borne diseases never before detected in this region. In 2014, Chikungunya virus had a significant impact on the Caribbean and this was followed by Zika virus in 2016,” the advisory said.

The ministry also added that ZAP is working in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Paraguay.
