Mario Deane’s mother, JFJ to attend overseas hearing on police killings in Jamaica
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Human rights advocacy group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) said it will be attending a hearing next week at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in Montevideo, Uruguay to raise concerns about police brutality in Jamaica.
JFJ said it will also be accompanied by the London-based human rights group, Amnesty International and Mercia Frazer, the mother of Mario Deane, who died after a severe beating in police custody in 2013.
She is to represent families whose relatives have been killed by the police.
The IACHR is a principal and autonomous organ of the Organization of American States (“OAS”) that promotes and protects human rights in the American hemisphere.
The JFJ said that in addition to raising concerns about ongoing allegations of unlawful killings by the police in Jamaica, it will also speak on the situation of pre-trial detention and the impunity those families of victims face.
The hearing is scheduled for Monday, October 23.
