BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (CMC) — Stroke-makers Shai Hope and Kieran Powell carved out half-centuries to help stabilise West Indies at tea on the opening day of the first Test at Zimbabwe here Saturday.

At the break, the visitors were 154 for three with Hope unbeaten on 56 and Roston Chase on 20 not out.

Powell also made 56 before becoming the only wicket of the second session.

Resuming on 65 for two at lunch, West Indies added 89 in the session as Hope and Powell put on 75 for the third wicket before being separated.

Unbeaten on 25 on resumption, Powell faced 133 deliveries and struck six fours before perishing in the second over following the drinks break.

His attempted sweep found an edge onto his pad and was taken behind by wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva, with a review confirming the dismissal.

Hope, on 19 at lunch, has so far faced 133 balls and counted five fours, and added 44 for the fourth wicket with Chase who has counted three fours in a 44-ball innings.

Earlier in the first session, the Windies lost opener Kraigg Brathwaite cheaply for three, caught at the wicket off seamer Kyle Jarvis in the day’s ninth over and Kyle Hope for 16, also taken behind off pacer Solomon Mire at the start of the second hour of play.
