KINGSTON, Jamaica — Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) Limited, Norman Brown, says following directives from Prime Minister Andrew Holness, he has contacted the Major Organised Crime & Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) to begin an investigation on projects completed under the previous government.

The agency in a release today said all relevant documents and files would be submitted to detectives to ensure that the required processes are followed.

Holness, earlier this month asserted that millions of dollars were misappropriated in the development of the housing schemes in St Elizabeth and St Mary respectively.

He noted that under the Jamaica Labour Party administration, the HAJ in 2008 built houses in Luana at a cost of $2.1 million per unit.

However, he said just a few years later the People’s National Project (PNP) administration spent $11 million per unit to build similar houses then sold them for $4.5 million.

He also pointed to another development in Boscobel, St Mary, where he said work, which should have cost $802 million, ended up running up costs of $1.6 billion.

However, since his call, Opposition spokesman on housing Dr Morais Guy said his party welcomed the investigation, noting that it has nothing to hide.
