ST MARY, Jamaica — The police have sought to make it clear that investigators have not yet established a motive for yesterday’s incident in which two people were shot and injured in Top Bay, Annotto Bay, St Mary.

This is despite claims from the People’s national Party (PNP) that the attack was politically motivated and was an intimidation tactic in light of the upcoming by-election in St Mary South Eastern.

Reports from the Annotto Bay police are that about 7:00 pm, a man was walking along the train line when he was attacked and shot by a man.

Another man, who was in close proximity, was then held up by two men, who came from the direction of the first incident. A struggle ensued during which the man managed to hit one of his attackers with a chair but was then shot by the other.

Both injured men were taken to hospital where they are being treated.

After the incidents, the PNP yesterday called on Police Commissioner, George Quallo to take immediate steps to stem what it called the growing incidents of “politically motivated violence in sections of the South East St Mary constituency”.

However, General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Dr Horace Chang responded today, saying the party had “been reliably informed that the persons injured last night were not involved in politics and have no connection to the current campaign taking place”.

The police said investigations are ongoing in the parish where the by-election is slated for October 30.
