Tivoli edge Cavalier in dull affair
A last-gasp strike by Captain Romaine Breakenridge pushed Tivoli Gardens to a 1-0 win over Cavalier SC in their Red Stripe Premier League match the Stadium East field yesterday.
Breakenridge netted in the 90+2 minute after goalkeeper Peter Harrison failed to hold onto a Junior McGregor free kick.
It was a decisive win for Tivoli Gardens in a match that deserved no winners based on the poor quality of play that provided only few chances.
Tivoli Gardens, with their second win from four games, are up three places to be provisionally fifth on seven points, while Cavalier slipped a spot to eighth with four points.
Tivoli Gardens started with their talisman Jermaine Johnson and the creative Howard Morris not in the squad, plus noted goalscorer Peter Keyes on the bench.
Cavalier — despite the occasional flair of national players Chevonne Marsh and Alex Marshall, along with Nicholas Hamilton and the calming influence of Kemar Shaw — struggled to impress.
But just when it appeared that a tame goalless draw would be the outcome, the visiting Tivoli Gardens snatched victory much to the delight of their small band of followers.
Winning Coach Omar Edwards said it was a good victory despite the opposition not offering much in the attacking third.
“If you noticed Cavalier came here to defend maybe for a point… they played a low press game right through the entire game, but we played higher up the field and created several opportunities, and the truth is we should have capitalised,” said Edwards, a former National Under-17 assistant coach.
Meanwhile, the promoted Cavalier, who were losing their third game from four matches, once again lost a match they should have at least earned a point.
“Tivoli had a change in their system that they usually play, so we took a little while to work it out. We were basically just playing them on the counter,” said Cavalier Coach Rudolph Speid.
