JLP, PNP to host mass rallies in St Mary
ST MARY, Jamaica — With two days to go before the much anticipated October-30 by-election, the two major political parties have scheduled separate mass rallies in St Mary South Eastern over the weekend.
The disclosure was made by the Jamaica Constabulary Force a short while ago in an advisory to members of the public who have business to conduct or who will be traversing Annotto Bay.
The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is expected to host their rally this evening from 6:00 to 11:00 pm and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) slated for tomorrow at the same time.
The JCF advised members of the public to avoid using the town as far as is possible during the period of the meeting. However, persons who must use the area should plan for possible delays as a result of these meetings.
The JCF said its traffic department has developed a traffic management plan to reduce congestion and provide access. However, due to the narrow streets and other factors, congestion is to be expected.
On Monday, Jamaicans in three constituencies will vote in by-elections to determine their representatives. However, the St Mary South Eastern seat, being contested by the JLP’s Dr Norman Dunn and the PNP’s Dr Shane Alexis, has been given key focus since the announcements of the two parties’ candidates.
Alexis and Dunn are seeking to replace former MP, the late Dr Winston Green who died suddenly; while the PNP’s Mark Golding and Dr Angela Brown Burke are vying against the JLP’s Dane Dennis and Victor Hyde to represent St Andrew Southern and St Andrew South Western respectively.
The St Andrew seats were vacated by Dr Omar Davies and former Prime Minister and PNP president Portia Simpson Miller earlier this year.
