Jamaica College (JC) defeated Kingston College (KC) 2-1 in an exciting encounter to lift their third ISSA/FLOW Walker Cup title inside the National Stadium yesterday.

Star player Tyreek Magee netted both goals in the 27th and 44th minutes as JC avenged last year’s 0-2 final defeat to the North Street institution.

Substitute Trayvonne Reid replied for KC in the 79th minute from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box.

It was JC’s third title in this their 15th final appearance following previous victories in 2009 and 2010. It was also KC’s first loss of the season.

The “Dark Blues” of Old Hope Road seemed to want this cup more than the “Famed Purples” of North Street and from the opening whistle it was clear JC were on a mission.

They were quicker to the ball, more composed on it and their decision-making was better, therefore it was no surprise when they took the lead.

A surging run down the left flank by Norman Campbell found Magee arriving at the back post to side-foot home with the outside of his left foot.

Then the talented playmaker could not believe his luck as he found himself with acres of space in the box following questionable defending, settled himself and unleashed a powerful left-footer that sailed past goalkeeper Chadeen Rodriquez on the stroke of half-time.

KC’s top marksman Rashawn Mackison hit the crossbar in the 70th minute which was easily their best chance in a lacklustre display.

But with JC sitting back on a two-goal cushion, KC found space and rhythm and began to impose themselves and pulled one back from the penalty spot and thus set up a tense finale.

The skilful Reid combined well with Mackison and was cut down by a defender. He brushed himself off and easily converted the spot kick.

KC, now with the ascendancy, huffed and puffed for that equalising goal but JC anxiously held on for a famous win.

But credit must go to JC who came more determined and stuck to their game plan efficiently for a well-deserved win.

At the final whistle, JC’s team manager Ian Forbes and head coach Miguel Coley ran towards their supporters in the grandstand to celebrate.

Despite winning a slew of trophies, this was Coley’s first hold on the Walker Cup and also avenged JC’s only defeat in five years, and he was elated.

“This was fantastic, it’s not even about revenge. We just want to win. We want to get into the whole lifestyle of winning every single event. I always keep on preaching to them that the winning mentality is always very important,” said Coley.

The winning coach also believed it was crucial to beat KC as it is a good morale-booster seeing that both schools could meet again in the Manning Cup.

“It is always a strong rivalry, Jamaica College and KC. It’s not about revenge, we have to do what we have to do,” he noted.

Coley also revealed his game plan was to press KC early and nullify their usual quick starts and it worked perfectly.

“It was very important. If you look at KC’s statistics, they have been scoring in the second minute, third minute, eighth minute and 12th minute. So we knew we had to come out hard, we had to set the template for the game and we did that,” he revealed.
