Use of firecrackers in public is illegal, the police warn
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police, as the Yuletide season approaches, are reminding the public that an import licence is required to bring into the island pyrotechnic articles such as firecrackers adding that the use of such items is prohibited in public spaces.
Individuals found trading in such goods without the required licence shall be subjected to prosecution and seizure of the goods, the police warned.
“The activating, discharging or throwing of any squibs, firecracker or any other illegal fireworks in any public place is prohibited by section 3(N) of the Town and Communities Act. Persons found committing any such offence are liable for prosecution,” the police added.
The lawmen noted that the activating, discharging or throwing of any squibs or firecrackers is not only frightening but many people find it difficult to differentiate between the explosions of firecrackers and that of a firearm.
