ROSE HALL, St James — Florida State University (FSU) and Tulane University both maintained their perfect win records as they won two games as the first Jamaica Classic men’s NCAA Division One basketball event ended at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Sunday.

FSU, who play in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), beat Colorado State University 90-73 in the first game after beating Fordham University on Friday’s opening day, while Tulane, under the guidance of former NBA coach Mike Dunleavy, beat Fordham 63-55.

In the final of the seven games played over three days of the event, the University of Hartford cruised to a 10 point, 68-58, win over Miami of Ohio in a game that ended after midnight.

After a near-empty venue on Friday, the crowds picked up over the last two days and organisers promised a better show come next year — the second of a five-year deal.

FSU, the highest-ranked team of those invited, were handed the Jamaica Classic trophy following their win over Colorado State, who lost both games after going down to Tulane on Friday as well.

MJ Walker came off the bench to score 22 points, including five three-pointers, for FSU who were ahead by 11 points, 47-36, at the half-time break. Terance Mann got 20 points and nine rebounds, Mfiondu Kaberngele scored 12, also off the bench, while CJ Walker scored 11 points for the winners.

Prentiss Nixon also scored 22 points for Colorado State, including five three-point shots, Che Bob, who earned a starting spot after coming off the bench on Friday, and Lorenzo Jenkins both scored 14 points and got 10 rebounds, as Deion James scored 11 points.

The first half saw both teams making runs as FSU scored the first five points of the game as they held Colorado State pointless in their first four possessions, but the Mountain West Conference team rallied with an 8-0 run of their own to take the lead prompting FSU’s Coach Leonard Hamilton to replace the entire starting five.

After trailing by 11 at the half, Colorado State were quickly out of the blocks at the start of the second half with an impressive 11-0 run to tie up the scores at 47-all, as Bob’s field goal and free throw after he was fouled brought his team level.

The team traded leads until FSU separated themselves with an 8-0 run to lead 56-50 with 13 minutes, 43 seconds to go, and Colorado State suffered a big blow when James picked up a fourth foul with 11:23 minutes still to go before eventually fouling out with 7:22 minutes on the clock.

CJ Walker took over down the stretch with nine of his 11 points in the final three minutes, as FSU outscored Colorado State 29-13 in the last seven and half minutes.

Tulane followed up their 27-point win on Friday with a solid win over a resilient Fordham to run their record to four wins on the season, led by the high-flying Melvin Frazier, who scored a game-high 23 points in 35 minutes, while also grabbing 14 rebounds, 13 on the defensive boards.

The “Green Wave” got off to a quick start with five of their six three-pointers coming in the first half, but trailed Fordham by two points, 27-29, at the half-time break, but stormed back in the second half to outscore the Bronx, New York-based school by 10 points, 36-26.

Jordan Cornish also scored 14 points for Tulane, while Colin Slater scored 13 points after starting on the bench.

Will Tavares led Fordham with 19 points, while Perris Hicks, who picked up three early fouls after coming off the bench, also got into double digits with 11 points, on three of four from the three-point range.

Hartford, who lost a heartbreaker to Long Island University-Brooklyn on Saturday, bounced back with a dominant 68-58 win over Miami of Ohio, thanks to 22 points from John Carroll, 18 points and 10 rebounds from JR Lynch, 11 points from Jason Dunne and 10 points from Jack Hobbs.

Hartford led 44-28 at half time and led by as many as 25 points in the second half.

Logan McLane was the standout player for Miami of Ohio, scoring 22 points and featuring in a low post battle with Carroll, while Jalen Adaway scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds.

Carroll scored 22 points as Hartford won 68-58 as they rebounded from a two points loss to LIU-Brooklyn the previous night.
