JPS, JPPC sign power purchase agreement extension
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Private Power Company Limited (JPPC) has formally extended its agreement to provide electricity to the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) power grid for an additional period commencing in January 2018 and ending on December 31, 2024.
The agreement, which was announced at a signing ceremony last Friday (November 24) at the JPS’ New Kingston office by Ingrid Christian-Baker, JPPC’s General Manager, and Emanuel DaRosa, President and Chief Executive Officer of JPS and witnessed by Minister of Science, Energy and Technology Dr Andrew Wheatley, will see JPPC supplying up to 60MW of electrical power to the JPS grid. The existing Power Purchase Agreement between both parties is scheduled to end in early January 2018.
While the JPPC’s generation plant is run by heavy fuel, it is consistently one of the most efficient external providers of electricity to the power grid, Christian-Baker pointed out. “We believe this was chief among the reasons the extension of our agreement was granted,” she said. The East Kingston-based company holds a 30-year generation licence, which was issued in 1994.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, JPS President and CEO, Emanuel DaRosa noted that, “JPS is proud to partner with an organization whose efficiency, capacity and professionalism have enhanced the delivery of electricity to the country. We look forward to the coming years of continued cooperation between JPS and JPPC.”
