NEW YORK, United States — As the Jamaican community here continues to grapple with Saturday’s suicide by the founder and chief executive officer of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill, Lowell Hawthorne, the Caribbean International Network (CIN) said it will provide a “special tribute” in his memory on Sunday.

CIN‘s founder and CEO Stephen Hill said the station will devote a seven-minute segment of its broadcast in honour of Hawthorne. The segment will highlight his achievements “and what he meant to the Diaspora”.

Hill, who shared a close business relationship with Hawthorne, said the segment will include one of Hawthorne’s last public acts, in which he presided over the the annual fund-raising gala of the Mavis and Ephraim Hawthorne Foundation.

The event last month raised more than US$100,000 for the Golden Krust scholarship programme, and Hill believes CIN — a television cable company — was the last to film Hawthorne before his tragic passing.

A clearly emotional Hill told the Jamaica Observer that he thinks Hawthorne was the least likely person to commit suicide. He spoke of their 20 years of shared values and said he thinks the Golden Krust brand and company will survive as Hawthorne had trained his three sons well.
