Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ in your own language is so 19th century. The greeting itself is said to have originated in 1699 when an English admiral used it in an informal letter. The phrase then appeared in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in 1843, and we don’t have to tell you that it has rapidly grown in popularity since then.
