Police commissioner meets with Montague
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Police Commissioner George Quallo met with Minister of National Security Robert Montague shortly after 9:00 this morning.
OBSERVER ONLINE understands that the meeting which took place at the minister’s Oxford Road office in St Andrew lasted 10-20 minutes.
Quallo was accompanied to the meeting by members of the Executive of the Police Officers’ Association (POA).
After leaving there he went to the Police Service Commission which is the oversight body put in place by Parliament.
It is uncertain at this time what that meeting was about.
Montague last Friday, summoned Quallo to a meeting after he received an updated report into the circumstances surrounding last Monday’s activities that resulted in the traffic pile-up on the Palisadoes strip in Kingston.Read: Police Officers Association lashes Security Minister for interference in the operations portfolio of the Commissioner
Quallo’s preliminary report that was submitted last Tuesday, according to Montague, did not meet the standards that the Jamaican public has come to expect from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
In fact, the national security minister rejected the report saying it was inadequate, as it did not address the questions raised.
Montague further expressed that as minister, he could not accept the report as it is not reflective of the hard work of the men and women who protect Jamaica daily.
In response to this, the POA in a scathing rebuke yesterday, said it is concerned about the serious distractions from the management of major crime in recent times and has accused the minister of directly interfering in the operations portfolio of the Commissioner of Police.
In a press release under the signature of chairman, Superintendent of Police, Catherine Lord, the POA made it clear that the actions of Minister Montague are likely to derail law enforcement strategies to combat crime.
The POA represent officers of the JCF from the rank of Assistant Superintendent and upwards.
