KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Public Service is continuing its drive to replace old lamps with new LED streetlights that “provide improved quality and reliability of street lighting”.

In announcing that it surpassed last year’s target by 1,400, the electricity company today outlined that the smart LED lighting technology can remotely read the consumption of each lamp, identify out-of-service lamps and provide for dimming of lights when necessary.

JPS said the LED lights are designed in line with international best practices.

The 36,400 LED lights installed last year spanned sections of Kingston and St Andrew, St James, St Ann, Trelawny, St Mary, Hanover, Westmoreland, and St Catherine.

JPS Project Manager, Shellyann Wilson said residents in the various communities have given positive feedback about the new LED lights. “Residents feel safer as the lights are brighter and provide better visibility. Also, residents are more appreciative of the white light rather than the yellow light,” Wilson observed.

Commenting on the commitment of the JPS team and contractors to successfully implement the ongoing project and meet projected targets, the project manager noted that: “The vision for a smart streetlight system was a dream that all of us shared and aspired to achieve and I believe that was our motivation to do well. Also, the overwhelming positive feedback we have received, served as additional motivation for us to do well,” Wilson added.
