Henry to review National Transport Policy
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Transport and Mining, Lester Mike Henry, says cabinet has given approval for his ministry to review the 2007 National Transport Policy.
Henry made the announcement at the second annual capacity building development meeting of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Service (TODSS) in Portmore yesterday.
Among the plans on which the transport minister has placed emphasis is the merger of the Island Traffic Authority and the Transport Authority into one regulatory body. The minister said he believes this will erase any blurred lines between the responsibilities of both organisations and lead to a more efficient and sustainable service.
Henry also made an appeal to transport operators to provide information which will guide in making the new National Transport Policy one that covers all stakeholders involved. He reaffirmed that his door is always open for discussions which is necessary in order for there to be any meaningful impact through the input for all stakeholders.
In the meantime, Henry spoke to the expected benefits of the proposed Portmore Transportation Hub to the commuting public and transport operators. He emphasised that a transportation centre should cater to all modes of public transportation as well as the needs of its users. He also stated that he expects full support from transport operators.
