KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) is calling on the Government to immediately, if not already done, undertake a safety audit on all children’s homes and other places of safety whether private or public.

The call follows last night’s fire at the Walker’s Place of Safety in Kingston, which claimed the lives of two young girls and displaced 34 other children.

In conveying its condolences to the parents, families and friends of both girls, NPTAJ said: “It is sad and indeed ironic that there seems to be no safety at a ‘place of safety’”.

The association also said the results of the audit should be made known to the public.

The Government said it is providing counselling and relief supplies for children and staff of the affected place of safety.

State Minister for Education, Youth and Information, Floyd Green, this morning said that the other 34 children and staff have been temporarily relocated to a nearby church, and arrangements have been made for the delivery of supplies.

“The fire service has also commenced their investigation. We are awaiting their report. The Child Protection and Family Services Agency will also do their own investigation to see what transpired,” informed Green.
