ST ANDREW, Jamaica — Prime Minister Andrew Holness said this afternoon that his Government is now prepared to take what he called “firm and resolute measures” to deal with Jamaica’s crime monster.

“We have reached the point where we are prepared to take these firm and resolute measures to ensure that the crime monster does not destabilise the promising future that is in store for Jamaica,” Holness said at a function to mark the 50th anniversary of Fontana Pharmacy in Mandeville.

“I know people in Montego Bay especially are very distressed by what they see playing out on the streets. But this will take great understanding and tolerance from the people because this fight against crime is not just the police, not just Government.

“It takes everyone to reach the point of understanding that the Government must act and act in a resolute fashion, however with respect for the rights and dignity of the people,” he added.

After his address, Holness refused to respond to journalists who asked him to elaborate on his comments.
