Acts remember Germaine Mason
AN outpouring of love and treasured photos flooded social media last week as entertainers, friends, and family celebrated the birthday of late Jamaican-born British Olympian Germaine Mason.
The high jumper, who died in a motorcycle crash on the Palisadoes main road in east Kingston on April 20 last year, would have been 35 year last Saturday.
Reggae singer Keznamdi dedicated a video to the Olympian on his Instagram page, where he sang lyrics from his song Never Forgotten.
“Fulljoy the little time on Earth with the people you love… Never Forgotten!!! Happy Earthstrong to mi General #germainemason,” a portion of the post read.
Chronixx shared a photo he took with the athlete in 2012 and said: “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Most High…Rastafari forevermore. #GER #germainemason.”
Photos of Mason were also posted by recently retired Olympian Usain Bolt and singer Christopher Martin.
“Happy G-day to one a di realest!!! I love u fam…this life and the next!!! See u on the other side #YouKnoDiSchwepps,” the latter said.
A celebration party was also held in honour of Mason at the Cove Coolout Restaurant & Bar on Winchester Road in Kingston last Saturday.
Mason was part of the MVP Track Club before switching allegiance to Great Britain in 2006 after his family migrated. Two years later, he competed at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and won a silver medal in the high jump. A former student of the Wolmer’s Boys School, he is also the national record holder in the high jump.
Mason is survived by his girlfriend Shari-Dee Barker, their two children, mother Carol, father David and seven siblings.
